Protective Styling with Box Braids

SURPRISE!!

I'm back with braids for the winter months and I'm super excited to be writing about it. I had decided to ditch the braids for graduation photos-only realize it was one of the worst possible decisions I could have made. The maintenance of my hair became not only a hassle, but a serious damaging agent to my strands. It was a nightmare! I've put together my top 5 reasons for going back to braids as my predominant protective style- all of many things you should consider when protective styling!

1. Maintenance
For me, maintenance is a huge factor in my choice of hairstyle. If I can't keep it looking neat with minimal work, then it's not for me. It's not that I'm lazy, I just really like sleep, it's just that I get frustrated and tend to take my anger out….physically. As in brushing my hair very, very hard at times. When my hair doesn't cooperate, I'm left with two temperamental emotions swirling around the room. With braids, I have absolutely nothing to worry about! I can leave my braids in for about 2 months before redoing a whole bunch of them. I have OCD when it comes to braids keeping in tact and looking neat. With a bit of touching up from time to time, these braids could last up to a year!

2. Versatility
Braids are extremely versatile. I've become the master of styling my braids in many different ways. They can be dressed up or down, which is also something I really love about them. Different colours
such as blondes, reds and deep blacks can be added in without a problem. Highlights and lowlights? You've got them in a matter of minutes- and it won't damage your hair! Changing up the parts to triangles or larger boxes can create a subtle, but effective look. *sigh* I could go on and on about how great these braids are!

3. Price
Since I can do my own braids, cost is never an issue when it comes to doing my hair. It takes a lot of time and patience, but the hair itself is quite cheap, and you don't have to worry about buying remy or brazilian hair for hairstyles like these. Try looking around for a good hair stylist if you can't do your own braids, or simply youtube it and see what pops up! It's easier than you think, and your wallet will thank you later.

4. Length Retention
I find that leaving my hair in braids seems to keep my ends tucked and protected. I never have to worry about getting to each area of my head when it comes to moisturizing because the parts make it very simple. Any braids sprays are great for keeping your hair clean and healthy. You can also use your very own spray bottle! Check curlynikki.com for more information on what you can use and what's best for your hair.

5. The Final Look!
I love the way the braids look once they're finished. Many celebrities including my favourites Janet Jackson (Poetic Justice…..put it in a song) and Solange Knowles have been sporting these beautiful braids. Even Beyoncé is a supporter of them, looking gorgeous in a lazy bun! The possibilities are endless with these braids and I recommend this style to everyone!
